In the early '70s, my family lived in northern NJ, well within range of WOR. I'd listen to Bob & Ray when I got home from school; and, when I could get away with it, I'd listen to Jean Shepherd late at night.

I just read these comics recently, didn't realize there was any doubt as to them being by Hanks or that they were "missing" as the linework seemed obvious.

Wouldn't surprise me if they were recycled from earlier stories though. That kind of thing happened often enough to not be too unusual.

Thanks for bringing this to light, Frank! The easy-going innovations and low-key, character-based stories remind me a bit of Jaime Hernandez's early Locas stories (they're apples and oranges in many ways, but share a sense of intellect and good humor informing every panel). I remember getting hugely into Jaime in the late 80s and thinking EVERYONE would try to tell stories the way he did from that moment on. It didn't work out that way! (Not sure it could have...)

I guess I just did not want to believe it to be true, but I take it all back.

Not that anyone cares but me...BUT....I spent a looong time looking at these pages again today
and have come to the conclusion that they are, in fact by Hanks.

The second story is taken directly from the final Big Red McLane tale with the captions rewritten and the faces re-rendered (possibly by another hand).

But the first story really had me stumped, so many of the compositions are un-Hanksian but ultimately tiny details such as hair-rendering, crowd-rendering , and big details like, yes, anatomy have made me change my mind.

I knew that sooner or later it would happen: the undiscovered Fletcher Hanks has been discovered.

Paul, thanks for your immediate and revealing reply! What you say makes sense. I added a PS to the post that includes a re-think about these puzzling stories.

I'm happy to have unearthed this quiddity of comix history. If you find out anything more about this, please let me know.

To begin with, thanks for the kind words about my Fletcher Hanks collections.

Secondly: WOW! Great find!

I need to study these with greater care, but at first glance I do not think that they are actually by Hanks. Certainly there are panels that are lifted directly from Big Red McLane stories with the faces redrawn. However, the telltale panels are those that are NOT from Hanks stories. These contain glaring compositional missteps that Hanks simply would not have committed.

Still these remain a bizarre and baffling addition to the already weird legacy of Fletcher Hanks. Bravo!
